Rules

    • The tournament will be conducted in accordance with the F.I.H. "Rules of Hockey 2009"
    • This is a co-ed, 11 vs. 11 full-field tournament. Each game is a straight 40 minutes with a 1 min half-time.
    • Teams are allowed to have a maximum of 16 players on their roster.
    • Players will only be permitted to play for one team for the duration of the tournament.
    • Teams are allowed a maximum of 5 male out-field players on the field at all times.
    • There is no overtime in the case of a tie. An extension of time to complete a penalty stroke or a penalty corner will be permitted. Point scoring will be:
      • Win: 3 points
      • Tie: 1 point
      • Loss: 0 points
    • Teams will be ranked following the group matches based on the number of points earned. In the case of a tie, tie breaker rules will be employed to determine ranking:
      • a) The winner of the game between the two teams
      • b) Goal Difference
      • c) Most goals scored
      • d) Penalty stroke competition
    • Playoff games that finish in a tie will be decided by a penalty stroke competition. Each team will select five players to take alternating penalty strokes. Anyone taking a penalty stroke must have been on the field at the end of regulation play. If the score is still tied, a sudden-death series shall be played. The five initial stroke takers are not permitted to take a second stroke until all members of their team have taken a stroke.
    • Teams shall wear the color that they specified for their team. Please have an alternate color available in the case that team colors are too similar to be distinguished. The team listed first on the schedule is the home team and has the right to first choice of color for the game.
    • All players MUST wear shin-guards and Mouth Guards (Gum Shields) at all times while playing.
    • Officials are being encouraged to adopt a zero tolerance policy towards 'back-chat'. If you question a decision in an inappropriate manner, expect to be carded.
    • Any issues arising that are not covered by the above rules will be decided by a combination of tournament officials and organizers.
    • The Chicago Cup steering team has received a lot of questions about having goalies playing for multiple teams and requests to contact goalies from other teams to play for them. In light of the numbers of requests, the steering team will allow goalies to play for multiple teams. In the event that the teams playing each other have agreed to share a goalie, the goalie should be prepared to designate their primary and secondary team. Any issues that arise during the tournament will be considered on an as-needed basis. We hope that this will allow for a higher level of play for the tournament by having a goalie play in every game. If you are a goalie and would be willing to play for other teams, please contact us. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Chicago Cup chair at chicagocup-chair@chicagofhc.com.

    • Liability and Conduct
    • All participants will be required to sign and return a copy of the "Liability Waiver and Code of Conduct Agreement".
    • Penalty cards will be accrued and carried with you throughout the tournament. Once an individual has accumulated two yellow cards, they will be penalized by having to sit out their next game. A red card will result in a minimum one game ban, a longer ban may be imposed at the organizers and officials discretion.
    • All participants will abide by all Northwestern University Department of Athletics and Recreation facility rules and regulations during the event.
    • Alcohol or illegal drugs or substances are not permitted at the field.
    • Please be respectful to the Northwestern University campus and use the trash cans provided.

Venue

We have an exceptional water based turf pitch purpose built for hockey. It's located on Northwestern University's campus, and all games will be played there. You'll be right on the lakefront, so even in the hot summer months, there's likely to be a cool breeze and a beautiful view of the city.
