Windy City Field Hockey has been a fixture in youth field
hockey in the Midwest over the past few years, but this
summer they added a new division that benefited our female
players. A summer league was formed to allow uncoached 7-a-side
games to be played on the Northwestern pitch, complete with
cages and goalies. Four captains selected teams from among
the players who had registered in the “College and Beyond”
division. Ana, Tina, Betsy, and Theresa ended up with one
person on each of the teams, which created for some friendly
rivalries. With no practice time, and most teams having
just met on the first night, it took most teams a few games
to get into the swing of things. However, since we were
among the very few “Beyond” players and the majority of
our teams were comprised of young, fit collegiate athletes,
the speed of the game and level of skill were both high.
Round robin games were played each night, such that each
team played all of the others every Wednesday evening for
6 weeks. The winners of each game were awarded a point in
the overall standings, with bonus points given for shutouts
and a greater than 4 goal differential. In the last week,
playoff games replaced regular round robin play, and the
team that Ana was on, the Green Monsters came out victorious.
Participants look forward to another exciting summer league
season, as we also try to convince WindyCity to allow the
men to join us…
