Nadeem & Shahid two of CFHC top
players, last weekend flew out to California to take part
in the Cal Cup 05. The Cal Cup is a prestigious West Coast
Field Hockey Tournement that attracts teams from all over
the region and players from even further. The tournament
boasts several divisions of competition, for more details
on Cal Cup’s results & structure please visit calcup.net..
Nadeem & Shahid played for California Thunder in the
competitive men’s division. Their team, California
Thunder took second place in the division and Nadeem &
Shahid now have shiny silver medals to show off.
Nadeem
is one of the founding members of our club and has been
integral to every development aspect of CFHC. While most
of us consider Nadeem the Grandfather of the team, we do
so out of respect for his dedication to hockey and the wealth
of experience he brings to our team.
Shahid,
aka the Kid, is probably our most naturally talented player.
A player gifted with the skills and stamina to run circles
around any opponent. CFHC has been fortunate to have Shahid
on our side on several occasions when he has been the determining
factor in hard fought matches.
Below A Brief Report of Their
Adventures By Nadeem Khan:
Shahid
& I flew in to LAX airport on 28th May05.
We missed our first game against Raptors, but our team mates
of California Thunder were able to pull off a win without
us. It was a 8:30am game, Shahid & I were weary having
taken the 0622 am AA flight from Chicago to L.A. We arrived
in LAX at 08:45 but did not make our way to the field until
11:00am
Some
of CFHC members may remember my cousin Rizwan, “Riz” who
was instrumental to our efforts in the OSU tourney of 2004.
Well it was Riz who was picking us up from the airport.
Riz getting pulled over by CHP (California Highway Patrol)
for cutting in from the car pool lane was our first adventure
in California.
Our
next game was at 3pm, we arrived at the hotel at 115pm or
so, changed and on to the field another 15 minutes from
hotel. played our game, won that (still dozed from no rest).
they liked Shahid, Shahid got more game time than me. As
we all know, the KID does know how to put on a show.
The games were of 20 min each half.. After the game
we went to hotel slept till 9 pm. Went out to dinner with
family that night. Next morning had a game with Taipei team
at 730 am. played that lost 2-1. played another game with
Phoenix won that 2-1. Went out to eat again late, at Denny's
.
So, we won 3 & lost 1. Monday morning we had our semi
with Phoenix Scorpions at 8 am- won that 3-2 (we were winning
with 3-0) they came back in last 10 minutes scored 2 goals.
Final we played at 1 pm against Taipei - lost (good game
lots of opportunities missed- even missed a penalty stoke)
lost 1-0. they got gold we got silver. (I guess good enough).
Flew all night again May 30th dep. at 1 115 pm arrives home
at 515 am. Shahid took the train home. I picked up my car
from long term parking and went home.
Was a fun weekend, got to see some good hockey in the super
men’s division as you can read on
