Hockey Bio: Faizal started playing hockey on the plains of Africa, first at a primary level at BishopMcKenzieSchool and then at Lilongwe Private School. Faizal also played with MSC, Indian Sports Club and represented the Under 18 Central Division Team for the Hockey Association of Malawi. After leaving Malawi, Faizal spent a year in England playing for Leicester Grasshoppers, in the Leicestershire Mixed Hockey Association. While in England, Faizal had the opportunity to meet and get some coaching from Sean Curly and Imran Shervani, former Great Britain Olympians and International players.

CFHC Experience: After arriving in Chicago, Faizal had much difficulty finding a field hockey club; this was before the internet days. He finally managed to find the North Shore Field Hockey Club and played under the legendary Mary Hill. While on the NorthShore team, Faizal played in several Six-a-Side tournaments at NU and many friendly matches with Midwest teams. In 2000, NorthShore went through a lull year without any games nor practices until scrimmages were once again revived by Mohit Bhalla. In 2001/2002 the team had 5 players and participation was very low. In 2003, the 5 founding members of present day club, Mohit Bhalla, Nadeem Khan, Montoo Baruah, Lisa Sorentino and Faizal Jogee decided to change the name of the club from North Shore to Chicago Field Hockey Club and the first website was created, after which participation began to rise. In late 2003, CFHC had its first internal Six-a-Side tournament organized by Faizal with the winning team being awarded medals and the first MVP of Year awards were presented to Nadeem Khan and Lisa Sorentino. In 2004, Faizal took on an active role in seeking tournament opportunities for the team to participate in and in March, 2004, CFHC made its first maiden trip to IU. The team had a tough lose but it was the start of something very special. Players from around the globe, who didn’t know each other, were bonded and united together for one common cause – and that was to play field hockey. It was a very special moment. A few weeks later, Faizal captained a team of 16 players to OSU for CFHC’s first Regional Championship. The team played triumphantly, making it to the finals only losing in the last penalty stroke. Having had the sweet taste of competitive field hockey, CFHC finally won its first Midwest Championship at MSU a few months later in July, 2004. Faizal later organized 2 teams for an indoor tournament for Cincinnati in Feb, 2005. In March 2005, after a very successful year of bringing competitive adult co-ed field hockey to the Chicago area, Faizal stepped down as Captain of Chicago Field Hockey Club. Faizal remains active in the Midwest Field Hockey community and is focused on creating opportunities for adult players from the Chicago area to compete in national and international tournaments such as the Cal Cup, Boston Cup, Atlanta Cup and the US Field Hockey Festival. Faizal has aspirations and continues to work towards of having a competitive annual adult field hockey tournament in Chicago with teams from across the US competing for the Chicago Field Hockey Cup.
